Build Day Checklist: Getting Your Hands Dirty

The parts have arrived! Awesome! Take a deep breath. Here’s what you need to do to prepare for the build itself.

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Find a large, clean, well-lit area. A dining room table works great. Clear off any clutter. You'll want plenty of room to spread out. Make sure it's not carpeted, or at least use an anti-static mat.

2. Unpack & Inventory

4. First Boot & Troubleshooting

Moment of truth! Before you button up the case, connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Power it on. Do you see anything on the screen? If yes, great! If not, don't panic. Common issues include:

  • Cables not fully seated (especially RAM or GPU power).
  • GPU not seated correctly.
  • Monitor input not selected correctly.
  • PSU switch off.

Post-Build Checklist: Software & Optimization

You’ve got a working PC! High five! But you're not quite done. Now it's time to get the software side of things sorted.

1. Install Your Operating System

2. Install Drivers

This is critical. Install motherboard drivers (chipset, LAN, audio), and most importantly, your GPU drivers. You can usually find these on the manufacturers' websites. Getting the latest drivers ensures optimal performance and stability.

3. Run Updates

Windows updates, driver updates, firmware updates – keep everything current. This patches security vulnerabilities and often improves performance.

4. Stress Testing & Benchmarking

Once everything's installed, run some stress tests (e.g., Prime95 for CPU, FurMark for GPU) to ensure stability and check temperatures. Benchmarking tools (e.g., 3DMark, Cinebench) can give you an idea of your system's performance compared to others.

5. Cable Management
